DB2 History 101: Version 4

Although not a big deal, and absolutely meaningless technically, up until now, DB2's name has managed to stay operating system free. However, with Version its name gets a little longer. On November 30, 1995 DB2 for MVS/ESA Version 4 went generally available (GA). From this point forward DB2 will no longer simply be DB2. New features/functions delivered by DB2 V3 were:

Stored procedures

DB2 History 101: Version 3

1993 was the year of DB2's 10th anniversary. It was the year that DB2 Version 3 was announced and became generally available (GA) on October 25, 1991 and then again on March 22, 1992. New features/functions delivered by DB2 V3 were:

Partition independence

Dynamically control buffer pool characteristics with ALTER BUFFERPOOL

DISPLAY BUFFERPOOL

DB2 History 101: Version 2.3

Just over two years will go by before the next new release of DB2 becomes available. DB2 Version 2 Release 3 was announced September 5, 1990 and became generally available (GA) on October 25, 1991 and then again on March 22, 1992. The first GA was for the base product. The second GA was for the delivery of remoter unit of work (RUOW). DB2 V2.3 may be one of my personal favorite releases.

DB2 History 101: Version 2.2

When I get distracted, I get really distracted; for months sometimes. I was trying to pop these steps back into DB2 history off close together, all grouped over a few weeks. I guess I missed that plan big time. So, I'm back attempting to finish my little history lesson. After all, DB2 turns 25 years old in 44 days (or less depending on when you read this post. DB2 Version 2.2 was announced and

Are you felling hiper this weekend? A few hiper APARs

I had intended to include these in Friday's APAR update. However, they didn't show up until late last night. So, a little late, but important just the same, here are a couple of hipers you might want to take a few seconds to check out. This first hiper is for DB2 Version 7, Version 8, and Version 9 so it's definitely something worth taking the time to look at, especially if

A few commments for today's IBM webinar (March 18, 2008)

I listened in on today's IBM webinar "DB2 for z/OS Trends & Directions". If you weren't able to listen in I thought I woudl share a few of the comments made during the webinar. The comments I am mentioning are based on facts and not opinions. Where is DB2 for z/OS being use?

The top 59 banks in the world

23 of the top 25 US retailers

9 of the top 10 global life/health insurance

Yup, it's getting closer. DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS Version 7 goes out of service on June 30, 2008. That's only 109 days away... or 3 months, 17 days.... or 15 weeks (rounded down)... or 2616 hours (at the time of this post)... or 156,960 minutes (at the time of this post)... or 9,417,600 seconds (at the time of this post).... If you are on Version 8 (or DB2 9), congratulations. If you are

APAR Friday: Just two today

This first APAR I couldn't resist. It's for Version 7 and it's the first Version APAR I have seen close in a long time; at list with the RSS feed I subscribe to. It deals with VIEWs returning a different result from the query that makes up the view. With the number of people that use VIEWs this could be a good one to check out... this APAR will produce PTFs for DB2 V7, V8 and DB2 9 so it can

I'm late on Friday, but at least it's still Friday. I just arrived home from SHARE a few hours ago and it took until now to sort things out enough so I could post this today. BTW, I thought it's supposed to warm in Florida? Orlando was freezing the last few days. Today's first APAR is a HIPER so you really should check it out to make sure it isn't impacting you and today's APAR are for DB2

Today's Friday APARs are arriving on Sunday. I would like to day I had all of these terrific reasons, being so busy and all, but nope.. just forgot to post Friday... I have one APAR this morning for DB2 V8 and one for DB2 9 that way there's a little something for everybody. My V8 APAR is for an issue that I could see some shops being annoyed by. You go through all this trouble to write
